CHAPTER

The Role of Long Term Memory in Learning

The cognitive architecture that makes up William's model is long term memory. That's represented differently to working memory because it's theoretically infinite in capacity. And of course, the goal of teaching is to help students move information to long term memory and learning is widely defined as that change in longterm memory. So we're actually drawing information from our long term memory all the time. In Willingham's model, it's called remembering or retrieval when we bring information from long term memory into our working memory. Every part of that model has really huge implications for classroom teaching. They're the most important things that we've learned absolutely sure.
