The Weimar System After 1933

After the resignation of Mueller and his cabinet on March 27th, elections were not immediately called. A new government was briefly formed under the leadership of Heinrich Bruning who would run into problems almost immediately after taking office. He could not gain support from the parties that he needed to pass the budget, including the Communists, the National Socialists, and other Nationalist parties. In fact, the Mueller government would be the last that would be able to obtain a majority in the Reichstag. For the next three years the leaders of Germany would be forced to rule under the powers of Presidential decree.
