The Importance of Fundamental Mathematics

I consider mathematics and physics to be intimately intertwined. Two plus two equals four comes from the physical world but the logic of mathematics enables us to interpret the physical world. So I don't want to get into an argument over which is more fundamental mathematics than physics because I consider them really two aspects of the same thing. It's always been the case as Karl Popper, the famous philosopher of science, pointed out 50 years ago.
