The Birth of Jesus Christ in a First Century Jewish Context

The birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise when as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. There's a lot going on in verse 18. It would be helpful to understand the contextual setting for what it means to be espoused or to be betrothed to somebody in a first century Jewish context.
