The Rise and Fall of Communism

In the 1950s and 60s, third world nations were not explicitly in an alliance with the United States. This meant they could be justified if it became necessary to block intervention against them. Under Eisenhower, neutrality was seen as being unhelpful for success of Iran's nuclear program. In many ways, at least from my perspective, this was a rallying cry. Communism is giving people something to fight for. All you're offering them is the status quo. And so a small amount of people in the third world became dedicated allies of Soviet Union.
