Eighteenth century ireland had a caste system based on religious and national origin. The anglo irish were a tiny ruling elite mostly descended from british nobility. Each social group in ireland was legally separate from one another, subject to different laws. As most of you probably know, the royal navy was the pride of the british armed forces during this era. By the time of the napoleonic wars, i've showed you that there was no reason to believe it couldn't be beaten.
