Most everyday reasoning and most scientific reasoning is done on the assumption that we actually have a pretty damn good understanding of what the world looks like. John Stuart Mill's Bertie, which was published about a little more than 150 years ago, includes most of the foundations of destruction, mud, and democracy. And now we take all these foundations for granted. Now it seems like, well, it's trivial that we could be living in a simulation, but it wasn't trivial until very recently.
