I don't want anybody to hear this as critique or blaming certainly not of the individual because I think when people have the information they use it. Cochrane found that supplementing pregnant women with omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy could reduce preterm birth and preterm birth is associated with a lot of physical and mental and brain health risks. That recommendation isn't being disseminated down to people who are in the preconception phase or early pregnancy so even if women were aware of it they can't get access to it. It's really about saying and asking why if this evidence of this research of this information that could make a meaningful improvement to the brain health and therefore life outcomes of babies and children
Distinguished psychologist Kimberley Wilson's recent book is Unprocessed: How the Food We Eat Is Fuelling Our Mental Health Crisis. In it, she explores the tangible links between diet and how the mind works. Wilson was a former Governor of the Tavistock & Portman NHS Mental Health Trust and has a master’s degree in nutrition. She also previously led the therapy service at what was then Europe’s largest women’s prison, so she knows first-hand about the importance of food and its role in mental health. Joining Kimberly in conversation is Christian Jarrett, cognitive neuroscientist and editor of Psyche magazine.
