The History of Castile
The Iberian Peninsula was home to several separate Christian kingdoms, along with a Muslim rump in the south. Castile had much more in common with the relatively weak royal government of France than the strong royal government of England. It took extraordinarily capable rulers, especially Isabella, and widespread disaffection with the nobles to push through reforms that made a united Spain one of the strongest states of the 16th century.
