John Avlon: We are now living under American 2nd Catholic president, I say living under you are, I'm observing Joe Biden. But before we get there, let's try and bridge the intervening years. So the Republican Party, Abraham Lincoln, and it immediately breaks apart the Republic. A war has to be fought and won. And as you say, in becoming the war party, they also become the party of mass mobilization of federal government.
