Complex marriage is the idea that love is great and you shouldn't restrict your affection to just one person. Monogamy was seen as kind of like selfish and self limiting. Despite saying they were going to fight against the rules of the establishment, they didn't go super free actually. They they created their own system, a very complex and highly enforced rules.
