I think the film relies on dread like a lot. And if you're not in the right, like basically, like, you need to be watching this in like a dark room. The filter as obnoxious as the filter is, that also helps because you see even less with that. You're trying to make sense of a photo that doesn't look like it has anything in it. There might be like a face hidden under the bed or in the closet in the shadow. Do you know what I'm talking about? Remember looking at one of those once, and it was embedded as a gift secretly, and it scared the shit out of me, it's like a jump scare in it.
