The Principle of Direct Reciprocity
The way of Jesus subverts the eye for an eye form of direct reciprocity by calling followers to break what would be endless cycles of reciprocating harm. Indirect reciprocity is based on reputation and introduces the element of reputation into the decision-making process. Those assess the reputation of others and are more inclined to cooperate with those known to have a history of cooperative behavior.
