The Death of Barrett Tillman
A group of diehards in the Imperial Guard assassinated a couple of the Emperor's senior advisors, and attempted to take over a radio station. They were unable to do that, although they knew that the Emperor had recorded a message to be broadcast the next day. Barrett Tillman: The fact that the Imperial Army was infiltrated with those who intended to die fighting rather than to suffer the disgrace of surrender shows how bitterly divided some elements of the Japanese government and military war.
