What Is the Romany Infusion?
There is also a romany infusion into all sorts of sub cultures that have formed in britain over the past several hundred years. In some cases, those romany terms then have passed over into the general english vocabulary. And you can see words like paw for friend, also shive for knife, which may have passed through the so called thieves cant, the jargon of the criminal underworld of london. Also, lollypop, common suite given out at fairs and circuses, skip as a word for dumpster. All of these are terms that have passed into english usage, at least into british English.
