Fortune and his family walked for days through the darian gap, a vast, undeveloped swath of jungle on the border of panama and columbia. At its height, there were about 15 thousand people at the encampment. But as a friday, no migrants left. According to the us Department of homeland security, 12 thousand, 400 hatians were allowed into the us. About eight thousand chose to return to mexico. Five thousand people are still in custody, and two thousand hatians have been deported back to haiti without being given a chance to seek asylum.
