The History of Birth Control in Urban China

Abortions under most circumstances could be punishable by law for much of the Republican period. Starting in 1928, any drugs with abortive patient properties could not be advertised as such. From what I can see, women from a wide range of backgrounds were undergoing abortions or using these products called chao jing yao. These are pills that are designed to bring on regular menstruation.
