Is Depression an Adaptation?
No evolutionary biologists would think of any negative affective state as anything other than an evolved adaptation. What happens when somebody gets depressed or even when they start doing expressive writing, where they start feeling sad, etc., is that energy gets directed to the brain. Negative affects are things which organize behavior, physiology, behavioral impulse and cognition in a way that are going to maximize the odds. And there's no reason to think of depression any differently.
