AOL had IPO'd all the way back in April of 1992, offering two million shares priced at $11.50 each. One man who liked what he saw in AOL was Microsoft's retired co-founder, Paul Allen. Not long after, Bill Gates came calling, and AOL would have another close call. With an eye toward the eventual Windows 95, Gates was investigating online services.
