The makers of Tweetbot. are running their own server now and it looks like they are going to do a client map. The idea is this is a server based thing that anybody can set up their own server. And then the servers talk to each other and you join a particular server. So I haven't joined Mastodon.social, which is the largest one but has since cut off adding new people due to too many switching from Twitter to Mastodon.
