How to Train a Deep Neural Network to Understand Contact Forces

We have a little camera and some lights looking inside the finger. And if you looked at the picture and compared what it looks like when nothing is touching inside our thumb sensor, you could very quickly see where contact is happening. It wouldn't be as easy for us humans to estimate the exact how many newtons of force in at what angle. But computers are really good at learning those patterns. We train a deep neural network that goes from these images all the way to a map of the contact forces all over the finger. Then we in the future will use that to let a robot control.
