Catherine II: The Great Russian Ruler
Catherine came to power in a coup after the previous emperor, her husband, was assassinated. As a foreign-born woman who seized power through violence, she was an unlikely ruler with little legitimacy. She navigated Russia's dangerous politics brilliantly but never lost sight of what was politically possible. The country expanded as well, mostly south, taking land around the Black Sea and swallowing up much of Poland.
