Ronald Regan was a former governor of california. He ran for the republican pres dential nomination and lost to gerald ford, who in turn lost to carter. In all kinds of ways, he's a genuinely great figure. My impression of watching him, listening to him reading his books, is that he has a mind cap he knows immense amounts of history. And he could actually picture a world without the soviet union,. at a time when no one else could do that.
