Introduction
The eighteenth century, as everybody knows, is the age of the great triumph of science. When the olympian gods become too tame and too rational and too normal, people begin to incline towards darker, mortonian deities. There is no doubt that organized religion was, in some sense on the retreat. And anything which couldn't be reconciled with reason became unfashionable. That is why it was necessary somehow to save religion by proving its harmony with reason.
