After the sacking of Metternich, marches and riots broke out in Budapest. In July 1848, another new liberal government was brought into power. But troops were gradually able to suppress the uprisings in Vienna. The emperor abdicated on December 2nd; he was succeeded by Josef Franz Ferdinand.
