The last time we saw an increase over 8% in Social Security payments was in 1981, 41 years ago. Cost of living adjustments often referred to as COLA have hovered between 1% and 4%. When you're running long-term retirement projections, using a historical average or even something a little bit lower than the average is likely the right approach.
