Jefferson and Jefferson's Negotiations in 1802
CNN's John Sutter looks back at a key moment in the history of U.S.-Mexico relations. In 1802, France was trying to buy New Orleans from Spain for $10 million. James Monroe and Robert Livingston went to negotiate with French politician Francois Barbay Marbois. They were asked if they would be interested in purchasing the whole Louisiana territory. The response: "How about this?"
