More and more Prussia became the sort of leading Protestant state, leading a Protestant bloc in opposition to Austria. And this became a new real threat challenging Austria within the Holy Roman Empire. This crisis in the mid-1700s then led in turn to a so-called diplomatic revolution, a dramatic realignment where Austria decided that in order to stop this juggernaut of Prussia they had to appeal once again to religious loyalties. They made nice with their long time traditional enemy to the West, France.
