In the politics example, identity is also a key aspect. Like we want to act in accordance with sort of our identity of ourself and we want to avoid acting in the identity of like groups we view as other or enemies to our group. And it's dangerous to be thought of as being part of an enemy tribe probably 10,000 years ago - you might get ostracized or killed for that.
