Until the 19th century, there wasn't a strong sense of British people are repressed. Darwin writes that English men rarely cry except under the pressure of the acutist grief. Professor Thomas Dixon from the Centre for Emotions says it's an attractive ideology. It fits with the era of empire, of white British men going around the world and having a stiff upper lip.
