In god we trust became the national motto, along with eplurabus unum. In god we trust was put on american currency. One nation under god was added to the pledge of allegiance. All that happened in the 19 fifties,. at the height of the cold war, to emphasize we're not godless atheists, communists. We are christian Americanans. So we're now living in the after glow of all that. Andit it gives the impression that we've always had those kinds of explicitly christian symbols as part of america's national civic religion.
