Ken Watts was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years, which was the maximum sentence allowed under Canadian law. He began serving his sentence at a maximum security prison in Ontario, but he was transferred to a medium security prison in the summer of 2012 when the original prison that he was in was closing down. Both Julie and Paul's families protested and wrote to the Supreme Court,. And they said the move felt like it was a slap in the face to them.
