The Importance of Reason in Islam

The idea isn't that you couldn't learn the rules of geometry without consulting an imam. It's that there's this specific knowledge which mankind needs for its spiritual guidance. The moatazila arguably think that reason is adequate to achieve understanding of the most important truths of Islam. So what would the Ismaelis say against that sort of view?
