The Winter Festival of Poseidon

Poseidon's epithets in these places vary, from Heliconios at Sonope to Asphalios or Stedfast and Thema Lucos. Poseidon figures predominantly in the foundation lore of a few cities bordering the Serenic Gulf. In Attica they were looking for a divinity as their patron and protector. So two gods correled over this new city, Athena and Poseidon. Both showed up, and the people didn't know what to do,. so they had an Agon, or contest. Zeus was later able to reconcile the Athenians with Poseidon by convincing them to grant honors, albeit secondary, to him too.
