Companies intentionally design features that take advantage of human psychology through the use of a something called intermittent positive reinforcement. Newport goes into some depth discussing how this works and what features have been developed using these things. He talks about this in the book, and i've seen this discussion elsewhere. When you're talking about something like facebook, comes up a lot, because it's so ubiquitous, everybody, almost everybody, uses it. We are not tasbook's customer. We are their product. Their customer is the advertisers, and they are selling us. They are selling our attention, our eyeballs on the screen. I just think that's really important.
