Most people intrinsically understand, even if they can't quite logically explain it, why the stock market might go down. As those profits increase, so will the underlying value of the company. What they're really doing is their looking at the stock market over the wrong time period. You're just betting that that particular day, the price of that stock, or whatever, will go higher because some investor is willing to pay a slightly higher price than you are.
