I Have to Have a Perfect Memory or There's No Way to Remember Anything at All
Vocalists wanted to summon up the past, but the past only exists in memory. So he can't because the only way to get to the past is through memory. He's not making a grand statement about his own perfect memory. But he's saying that vocalists is trying to restore a past era and he's not going to be able to do it. The final paragraph of the chapter, he says, if I was one of you people who didn't have my vivid memories of the past, then I would have rejected vocalists on that day. Because I remember back to that moment so vividly, I had no choice with this reminder but to think of him and recommit myself
