The north west mounted police were in charge of enforcing the ban against the sun dance. The government decided to close fort walsh a year before, because they thought closur would make it worse on indigenous folks. But john a macdonald's government insisted on the closur and by october 18 84, the northwest mounted police force would now be under the mandate of the department of indian affairs. So it banned ceremony, dance, language. And many communities are still attempting to recover those traditions.
