In the years after 1945, both East and West scrambled to assemble an arsenal of nuclear arms. Nukes have become weapons that can actually be used, at least if humanity is to have any meaningful future. If one side was to fire on the other, it would spark a tit-for-tack conflict that would level not just cities, but entire nations or continents.
