The first college level African studies program was at Fisk University under Mark Hanna Watkins in 1943. Black students and Black faculty began to want something different, both about the Black experience and about Africa. HBCUs were initially founded with this intense Eurocentric orientation. So they just followed exactly what the mainstream institutions were doing.
