Introduction

In 1522 rats ate through much of the barley crop in Burgundy, France. The bishops decided to put the rats up for trial as a solution to this particular problem. Bartolome de Chosanu was an expert in Roman law and widely respected probably in his community. He argued that if you're making someone come to court where they have to travel across lands controlled by their enemies, it is well established precedent that you need to give them a guard.
