The Chemistry of the White Dwarf
This white dwarf probably formed in a sort of special way where we had two white dwarfs that merge together to make this object. But towards the end of the stars life, in its central region, it's turning hydrogen into helium in a rather thin layer. Then helium to carbon and oxygen and even things like neon. They're a little bit further along. And that layer where the nuclear burning is, it has a lot of nuclear burning, but it's quite thin. So you can end up with, depending on the details, different surface compositions.
