General Relativity Won't Help
Vacuum energy is associated with all of the fields that we know of in the universe. So it's not just one field which has the potential to blow the universe apart. Particle physics probably won't help, because its only interested in relative energies. General activity is interested in a absolute energy. And so it blinds to the effect that it has on the expansion of the universe. It tells you if the universe is made of this, then it will inaain way. But it can't tell us, no, you can't. You can't have that ridiculously fast expanding universe.
