So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast

CHAPTER

Is There Social Pressure That Comes From Making the Argument?

Is Mill essentially arguing for people to not argue vociferously or if they hold a strong opinion? How are we supposed to convince other people of what is right and what is wrong without some sort of social pressure that comes from making the argument? Does that make sense? If it's intellectual pressure, right, it's persuasion, it's logic, it's compelling research, that's not the kind of pressure that mill is concerned about. You know, on the other hand, there are certain kinds ofsocial pressure that go beyond that. I don't want to say too much about this because this could take us down a wormhole.
