How LIGO Can See Extreme Mergers

LIGO cannot see the most extreme merging events we can imagine of a gargantuan merging into another gargantuan. And yet we believe these things should be happening. More or less is a process of, otherwise, how do you make such big black holes? There must be a process of merging of smaller black holes to eventually get to the big ones. How could you have a detector bigger than the Earth though? I'm so glad you asked me this question. It's the perfect question. This is what it's all about.
