i would suggest that the exaggerations and distortions have themselves been exaggerated. The work does, at times, treat marshall and his deeds as heroic in the manner and on the scale of the chanson de jeste or the romance of alexander. Not only were such works the obvious model, the vocabulary, the idiom for recounting the deeds of a great achiever but they were also, in all probability, the model to which marshall was aspiring in his life. And so once you establish that ideal and that template in place, riht, then it is a guide, and it leads new generations of young men who have don't know hw to shape their raw
