Afghanistan's like before the taliban came into power something like 60 percent of the economy was propped up by by aid. The only way that farmers are going to shift away from opium into other kinds of crop is with a fair bit of investment and support, says John Defterios. People living hands to mouth in afghanistan are not in a position to do that because they don't have any cash. That's why the taliban's pushing so hard for it and why they're pushing sohard for recognition as well.
