The Importance of Standard English

For every one native speaker in the world, there are now five non native speakers who are speaking English to a reasonable degree of fluency. So what we have in a situation which is now global at once upon a time was just national. We need a standard language because a standard promotes intelligibility. That's what standards are for and the bigger a language gets, the more that standard is needed.
