Kellerman's First Try to Swim the English Channel
Kellerman made her first attempts to swim across the English Channel along with six men on August 24th of 1905. She swam an average of 45 miles or 72 kilometers per week, increasing the distance of each swim until she'd done the 24-mile stretch from Dover to Ramsgate. The closest she came in these three attempts to actually crossing was about three quarters of the way, which took 10 and a half hours. Later, Kellerman would say she thought she had the endurance to swim the Channel, but not the raw strength.
