I've Been Doing Aerobic Endurance Training for a Long Time Now and I'm a Big Fan of That.
Triathlon really at its heart is about efficiency and you get efficiency I felt by well in the pool particularly by being really good at swimming at a particular pace. So even when I was in long aerobic sessions swimming at 80 or 75 pace I was going out and swimming reps. A key session of my week would always be a local chain gang which to honest is really an hour of spiked threshold to video to training.
